# How do automatic discounts like family or sale pricing work at checkout?

> Automatic discounts, like a family discount or a sale, apply on their own when your cart matches the club's rule, and checkout shows why each one applied.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **There's no code to type.** Automatic discounts apply on their own when your cart meets the club's rule.
  * **Sign in before you pay** so a family discount can count the enrollments you already have.
  * **A better automatic discount replaces your code.** It takes over when it saves more than a promo code you entered. Discounts never stack.
</Note>

**While you browse.** A program card or page can show a green label naming a sale, with the regular price crossed out. If the sale covers only the first payment of a recurring price, the label reads "\[sale name] - first payment \$19.00" and the regular price stays as shown. A family discount, or another automatic discount that depends on your family or the rest of your cart, doesn't show as a sale label. You see it at checkout, which has the final price.

**At checkout.** Discounts appear under the **Discount Code** box. Each automatic discount gets a green label naming it and why it applied, for example "\[discount name] - 2 athletes enrolled". It has no **Remove** button; it drops off if your cart stops matching the rule. A promo code you typed gets its own label.

**Why signing in matters.** Some family discounts count your family's existing active enrollments, which checkout sees only when you're signed in. Signed out, you may see **Sign in to apply family discounts**: "This gym discounts families with more than one active enrollment. Sign in so we can count the ones you already have." Select **Sign in** to be counted; it's not a promise of a discount.

**When a code is replaced.** An automatic discount replaces your code on an item only when it saves you more on that item; a tie keeps your code. If it replaces your code on every item, your code's label reads "A better automatic discount replaced \[code]."

**On a recurring item.** For a membership, pass or anything billed automatically, a blue banner can show the discount, today's charge, and when later charges start: at the regular price, or at the discounted price if the discount applies to every charge.

**Family discounts on later charges.** A family discount that applies to every charge and counts your family's active enrollments is checked again at each automatic charge, so it can change if a sibling joins or leaves. The upcoming amount reads **(estimated)** on the **Next Charge** tile in **Billing Details**, in **Invoices**, and on the invoice's **Automatic payment** note: "The final amount reflects your family's enrollments on the charge date." On a phone, both pages are under **More**.
