# How do I assign an older pass to my family?

> Give a pass or punch card you bought before families existed to your family, keeping its balance and billing.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Only the family owner or a co-manager can assign**, and only the older passes and punch cards they bought themselves.
  * **Balance and billing carry over.** The balance and any auto-renewal stay as they are, but you can't undo the assignment or move the pass to another family.
  * **Open the right family first.** The pass goes to the family whose page you're on.
</Note>

**Why some passes need a family.** Passes and punch cards now belong to a family (see [What is a family?](/families/families-household/what-is-a-family)). Ones bought before families existed, and some carried over when your club moved to Uplifter, still belong only to the person who bought them. They wait on the **Family** page until that person assigns them. If someone else bought the pass, ask them.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your family">
    Open **Family** in the sidebar (on phones, under **More**). In more than one family? Choose the one the pass should belong to from the list at the top of the page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find your older passes">
    On the **Family passes and punch cards** card, look under **Choose a family for your existing passes**. A pass shows its name and club; a punch card shows its club, card number and punches remaining. No such section means nothing here is yours to assign.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Assign it">
    Select **Assign to family** next to the pass or punch card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The dialog **Assign this pass to \[family name]?** reads "\[name] becomes a family benefit. Its balance and existing billing stay intact. It cannot be moved to another family after assignment." Select **Assign pass**, or **Keep unassigned** to back out.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**What happens next.** The pass moves into the family's list on the same card and covers that family's athletes. Its balance stays the same, and an auto-renewing pass keeps its billing schedule, now renewing for the family. It stays with the family even if you leave it later.

**If you leave it unassigned.** It keeps working the old way, covering the athletes you were linked to as a guardian. That older coverage stops once you switch those athletes over with **Review existing access** and **Confirm family access** on the Family page, so assign your passes too. On the **Punch Cards** page, an unassigned punch card shows **Family assignment pending** beside its card number.
