# What is a family, and who can see my athletes?

> How families work in the family portal: the four roles, who can see an athlete, what stays private, and how someone outside your family gets limited access.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Every account has a family.** Your athletes belong to it, and you can be in more than one family.
  * **Owners and co-managers manage it.** They invite people and manage access. Guardians can see and add athletes, and athlete accounts manage only themselves.
  * **Owners, co-managers and guardians can access every athlete in the family.** For limited access to one athlete, use Shared access.
  * **Money details stay with the payer.** Payment methods, full receipts and personal balances stay with whoever paid.
</Note>

**What a family is.** A family is the household Uplifter uses to decide who can see and manage which athletes, at all your clubs. Every account gets one automatically, named "\[your name] family", and owners and co-managers can rename it. You and your athletes can be in several families: switch at the top of the Family page, or in an athlete's **Family** section.

**The four roles.** "Guardian" is one role, not every adult.

| Role | What they can do |
| - | - |
| **Family owner** | Everything a co-manager can, plus change roles, invite or remove co-managers, and transfer ownership |
| **Co-manager** | Guardian access, plus invite and remove guardians and athlete accounts, manage relationships and Shared access |
| **Guardian** | Access and add the family's athletes |
| **Athlete** (invited as **Athlete account**) | Manage only their own profile |

Each family has one owner. To leave while others remain, the owner first transfers ownership to an adult guardian or co-manager, becoming a co-manager.

<Info>
  **How family access works.** Guardians can access athletes in this family. Athlete accounts manage only themselves. Shared access includes only the permissions you choose. Payment methods and private records stay with their owners.
</Info>

**Who can see an athlete.** Only:

* the athlete, on their own profile
* anyone with an owner, co-manager or guardian role in one of the athlete's families
* someone with Shared access to that athlete, limited to what was chosen
* older connections from before families (see **Preserved athlete access** at the end of this page)

No one else can see them in the family portal. Family tree relationships don't change access.

**Shared access.** Owners and co-managers can give one outside person, like a grandparent, chosen permissions for one athlete at chosen clubs, without adding them to the family. Profile and medical information follow the athlete to every club. Signing waivers is never included.

**What stays private.** Family adults see the **Athlete charges** card: purchases recorded to this family for its athletes, whoever paid. Complete receipts, payment details and personal balances stay with the payer, and **Invoices** lists only your own. Athlete accounts see only their own charges. People with Shared access see charges only with the **Athlete finances** permission. Passes and punch cards bought for the family belong to it, for eligible family athletes to use, even if the buyer leaves.

**How people join.**

* **Invite family member:** owners and co-managers invite a **Guardian**, **Co-manager** (owner only) or **Athlete account**, who must accept within 7 days.
* **Add athlete from another family:** an adult in your family adds an athlete they can already see. An athlete with their own login approves this. Otherwise an adult in one of the athlete's families must choose **Approve sharing**, unless the requester already is one.
* **New athletes** join the family they're added to, including ones your club adds (see [How do I add my child as an athlete?](/families/families-getting-started/add-my-child-as-an-athlete)). Adding yourself as an athlete requires being 18 or older and agreeing to share your athlete information with the family's guardians.

**Leaving and removing.** Removing someone, or leaving, ends access through this family at once. Access through other families and purchases stay. Removing an athlete pauses Shared access to them from this family. An athlete can't be removed from their last family.

**A tour of the Family page.** Open **Family** in the sidebar (on phones, under **More**). The header has **Add athlete**, **Invite family member** (owners and co-managers) and the three-dot **Family options**: **Add athlete from another family**, **Rename family**, **Add relationship** and **Create another family**, as available. Below:

* **Your family tree**, as **Tree** or **People** (phones start on People). Select a person to see their relationships and access.
* **Shared access**, and **Connected clubs** when relevant
* **Add your first athlete** (while you're the only member), **How family access works**, **Missing requirements** (when something is missing)
* **Family passes and punch cards**, **Athlete charges**, and for owners and co-managers a collapsible **Family activity**
