# How do I invite someone to my family?

> Invite a guardian, co-manager or adult athlete to join your family, and see what happens before and after they accept.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Owners and co-managers invite.** Only the family owner or a co-manager can invite people, and only the owner can invite a co-manager. Guardians and athlete accounts can't send invitations.
  * **Nobody gets access until they accept.** The invitation expires after 7 days, and only the invited email address can accept it.
  * **There's no resend button.** If an invitation lapses, send a new one to the same address.
  * **Guardians can access every athlete in the family.** To share just one athlete, use Shared access instead.
</Note>

**What an invitation joins.** A family invitation adds someone to your whole family, not to one athlete. Payment methods and private records stay with their owners.

**The three roles.**

| Family role | Who can invite them | What they can do |
| - | - | - |
| Guardian | Owner or co-manager | Access every athlete in this family |
| Co-manager | Owner only | Access every athlete and manage people, relationships, and shared access |
| Athlete account | Owner or co-manager | Manage their own profile and use family benefits only for themselves |

**Where to find it.** In the family portal, open **Family** (on phones, under **More**). Owners and co-managers see **Invite family member** at the top of the page.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start an invitation">
    Choose **Invite family member**. The **Invite someone to your family** dialog opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter their email and role">
    Enter their **Email address** and choose a **Family role**: **Guardian**, **Co-manager** (owner only) or **Athlete account**. The dialog explains what that role can access.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm and create">
    Tick **I understand this role's access.** Then choose **Create invitation**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**What happens next.** You see **Invitation sent**, or **Invitation ready** with a link to copy and send yourself if email delivery was unavailable. Both say "They must accept before access begins." Only the invited email address can accept the link.

**The rules.** The invitation expires 7 days after you create it and can be accepted only once. It waits under **Waiting for a response** as "Family invitation. Access begins after acceptance." Until it expires, you can cancel it with **Revoke invitation**. There's no resend, so send a new one instead. If new family sharing is paused, you see "New family setup and sharing are temporarily paused."

**The invitation email.** The subject is "You have a family invitation on Uplifter". It has a **Review invitation** button, says the invitation expires in seven days, and tells them their other families and athletes are never added automatically.

**What the invitee does.** They must use the invited email. With an existing account, they choose **Accept invitation** or **Decline** on their own **Family** page, or open the email link and choose **Join on my own** or **Merge a family I manage**. Someone new to Uplifter accepts while creating their account. An **Athlete account** invitation needs an adult who already has their own athlete profile. See [How do I accept a family invitation, and what happens if I merge families?](/families/families-household/accept-a-family-invitation).

**For one athlete, not the whole family.** For a grandparent or caregiver who needs just one athlete, use Shared access and choose their permissions and clubs. See [How do I give someone limited access to one of my athletes?](/families/families-household/share-access-to-an-athlete).
