# Why can't I sign in?

> What each sign-in message means and what to do next, from a wrong password or an expired code to a Google or Microsoft address Uplifter doesn't recognize.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Google and Microsoft need your club's address.** From the login page, an email that doesn't match the account your club has on file shows **We don't recognize this email**, and no account is created.
  * **Codes expire fast.** Codes and links in sign-in emails expire after 10 minutes, and only the newest one works.
  * **Invited but never set up?** Open the invitation email, or choose **Email Code** with that address to get it sent again.
  * **A reset won't reopen a deactivated account.** If your club deactivated you, a new password won't help. Contact your club.
</Note>

**Find your message.** Match what you see, then follow the fix.

| You see | What it means | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| **Invalid email or password. Please try again.** | The email and password don't match, or the account has no password yet. | Check the address, then choose **Email Code** or **Forgot your password?** |
| A **Too many attempts** pop-up and **Please wait a few minutes before trying again.** After Google or Microsoft: **Too many sign-in attempts. Please wait a moment, then try again.** | Too many tries in a short time, so sign-in is paused. | Wait a few minutes, then try once more. |
| **That verification link has expired. Please request a new code.** or **Email sign-in link has expired. Please request a new code.** | The link is more than 10 minutes old, was already used, or a newer email replaced it. | Ask for a new code and use only the newest email. |
| **Invalid or expired code. Please try again.** or **Invalid or expired verification code.** | The code is mistyped, more than 10 minutes old, already used, or replaced by a newer one. | Choose **Resend code** and type the code from the newest email. |
| **We don't recognize this email** | After Google or Microsoft: no Uplifter account uses that address, and none was created. | Choose **Try a different email** and use the address your club has on file. Not sure which? Ask your club. |
| **We could not finish signing you in** | Your email is fine, but the attempt didn't carry through. No account was created. | Choose **Find your club** and start again from your club's website. If it keeps happening, contact your club. |
| **You have an invitation waiting** | You were invited but never finished setting up. | Open the link in your invitation email. Can't find it? Check spam, or choose **Email Code** and send a code to that address to get the invitation again. |

**No code arrived?** After **Send sign-in code** you always see "If an account exists, a sign-in code has been sent to your email." Only an active account gets a code. An invited account gets its invitation again, and an address with no account gets an email saying no account was found. Check spam, then choose **Resend code**.

**After you sign in.** A **One more thing** page asking you to accept the terms or sign your club's waivers is a required step, not an error: see [Why does Uplifter say 'One more thing' after I sign in?](/families/families-getting-started/one-more-thing-after-sign-in)
