# How do I award an achievement or badge to an athlete?

> Award an achievement or badge by hand, from an athlete's profile or while you score an evaluation, and find out when the family sees it.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Permission and plan.** You need the **Record Evaluations** permission on a plan with **Training**. Without them the **Achievements** section and the **Add achievement or badge** button are hidden.
  * **Achievements can wait.** A new achievement stays hidden from the family until someone with **Publish Achievements** publishes it, unless it is set to publish automatically. Badges show to the family straight away.
  * **Award only.** You can't revoke an award or change its date. Ask your office.
  * **While scoring.** Anything you add is awarded when the evaluation saves, whatever the mark.
</Note>

**From the athlete's profile.** Any time, no evaluation needed.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the athlete">
    Go to **Athletes**, open the athlete, and scroll to **Achievements**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what to award">
    Tap **Award achievement** or **Award badge**, then pick from **Achievement** or **Badge**. Anything the athlete already holds isn't listed. For an achievement, **Normally earned when:** shows what usually earns it, or **This achievement is awarded by hand.**
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the date (optional)">
    Pick an **Awarded on** day, up to today, or leave it empty to record today.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish now (optional)">
    If you hold **Publish Achievements**, an achievement also shows **Publish to the family now**. Leave it off to publish later. Publishing can't be undone.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Award it">
    Tap **Award achievement** or **Award badge**. A message confirms, for example **\[achievement] awarded to \[athlete]**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**While scoring.** **Add achievement or badge** sits under each athlete's note on the class **Submit evaluations** screen (tick the athlete first), on **New evaluation**, and on a late report card (**Write a late report card** on an ended class).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the picker">
    Tap **Add achievement or badge**. It reads **Awarded to \[athlete] when this evaluation is saved.**
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick and confirm">
    Choose from **Achievements** and **Badges**, up to 25 of each, then tap **Done**. Picks show as labels under the athlete. Tap a label's x to remove it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the evaluation">
    When it saves, the message adds a line such as **Awarded 1 achievement and 2 badges.** The awards take the evaluation's date.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**When the family sees it.** A new achievement waits for someone with **Publish Achievements**, unless it publishes automatically. That includes awards you add while scoring, because **Publish to the family now** is only on the profile. The default **Coach** role can't publish, and your profile view doesn't show which awards are still waiting, so ask your office. Badges show at once. No notification is sent.

**What gets skipped.** Anything the athlete already holds is left as it is. An achievement you award also gives any levels and badges it grants.

**If an award fails.** The evaluation still saves, and you see **The evaluation saved, but the awards for \[N] athletes didn't. Add them from the athlete's profile.**

**Changing an award.** Office staff revoke awards and correct dates from the admin dashboard. A revoked achievement is never awarded automatically again, only by hand.
