# How do I manually promote an athlete off the waitlist?

> Use the Promote button to move a waitlisted athlete into a program and charge their saved card.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Promoting charges the family's saved card immediately. The confirmation dialog shows the standard program price, but a family holding a discount pass or membership tier may be charged less than the figure shown.
  * Manual promotion ignores both the Automatic Promotion setting and the program's capacity, so you can intentionally over-fill a full program.
  * If the card declines, the athlete is still promoted with a 24-hour window to add a card and resolve payment.
</Note>

Promote any waitlisted athlete straight from the program's Waitlist tab.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Waitlist tab">
    Go to **Registrations → Programs**, pick the program, and open the **Waitlist** tab. You'll see the ordered list of waitlisted athletes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Promote">
    Click **Promote** on the athlete's row. For a paid program, a **Promote from waitlist?** confirmation dialog opens. For a free program there's nothing to charge, so the promotion happens immediately with no dialog.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the charge and confirm">
    The dialog shows the standard program price — "the program price of $X" for one-time programs, or "the first month/year of $X … billing then continues automatically" for recurring programs — plus any applicable tax and fees. A family holding a discount pass or membership tier may be charged less than this figure. Click **Charge & promote** to confirm.
  </Step>
</Steps>

On confirmation, Uplifter charges the family's saved card, enrolls the athlete, and sends them a "spot is available" notification.

Manual promotion is your override. Because it ignores the capacity check, you can promote someone even when the program looks full — useful when you've decided to add one more athlete. It also works whether or not Automatic Promotion is turned on.

If the card declines, the athlete is still promoted into a payment-pending state and the family gets 24 hours to add a working card. Exact charge amounts and recurring setup are covered in the billing article below.
