# What happens when I delete a level?

> When Uplifter refuses to delete a level, what the two confirmations say, and what changes for athletes, requirements, achievements and evaluations.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Skills block the delete.** You can't delete a level while any skill is tagged to it. Remove it from those skills first.
  * **Athletes and requirements lose it.** Otherwise, deleting removes the level from every athlete who holds it and from every program, membership, booking and competition requirement that names it.
  * **Achievements pause, and there is no undo.** Achievements that need the level stop awarding automatically until reviewed, and the delete cannot be undone.
  * **You need Delete Training.** Deleting a level needs the **Delete Training** permission. The Coach role does not include it.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Levels">
    Go to **Settings > Training > Levels**. Levels need the **Training** feature.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click the trash can">
    Click the trash can icon at the end of the level's row. It has no text label. The pencil beside it edits the level.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the first prompt">
    **Delete \[level name]?** asks "Are you sure you want to delete "\[level name]"? This action cannot be undone." Click **Delete**. If nothing else uses the level, it is deleted and you see **Level deleted successfully**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the impact, if asked">
    If the level is in use, a second prompt lists what will change, with a count for each, for example "\[n] athlete(s) are tagged with it - those tags are removed." Only the connections that exist are listed. Click **Delete anyway**, or **Cancel** to keep the level.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**When the delete is refused.** If any skill is tagged to the level, clicking **Delete** on the first prompt shows "Cannot delete level that is in use" and nothing changes. There is no override. Go to **Settings > Training > Skills**, choose the level in the **All Levels** filter, click each skill to open **Edit Skill**, remove the level under **Levels**, click **Save Changes**, then delete the level again.

**What changes.**

| Where the level is used | What happens |
| - | - |
| Athletes tagged with it | The tag is removed from each athlete. |
| Program, membership, booking and competition requirements | The level is taken out of the requirement. If it was the only level a requirement accepted, that requirement is switched off, so it no longer checks level. |
| Achievements with a **Holds level** condition on it | **Award this achievement automatically** is turned off. The achievement's **Rule** tab explains why and asks you to review the conditions and turn it back on. |
| Achievements that award the level | They stop granting it. |
| Levels whose **Next level** is this one | They no longer advance into it. |
| Evaluations, evaluation templates and template sections tied to the level | They are unlinked, not deleted. |

**Who can do this.** The Coach role can view, create and edit training but not delete it. Without **Delete Training**, the delete stops with **Forbidden** after the first prompt, so ask an admin.
