# How do I set up achievements and badges?

> Create an achievement, set the conditions that award it automatically, choose what earning it grants, and create the badges achievements hand out.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Achievements and badges are part of Training.** Find them under **Settings > Training**, on plans that include Training.
  * **Conditions award automatically.** An achievement with conditions is awarded when an athlete meets every one. One with none can only be awarded by hand.
  * **Awards stay hidden from families until someone with Publish Achievements publishes them**, unless the achievement has **Publish awards automatically** on.
  * **Deleting a badge removes it from every athlete who holds it.** You can't delete one while an achievement still grants it.
</Note>

**Where to find it.** **Settings > Training > Achievements** has an **All achievements** tab and, for staff with **Publish Achievements**, an **Awaiting publish** tab. Opening the **Achievements** or **Badges** page needs **View Settings**. Creating an achievement or badge needs **Create Training**, and changing one needs **Edit Training**.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the achievement">
    Click **New Achievement**. Enter a **Name** (for example "First Competition") and optionally a **Description**, **Badge image** and **Color**. Leave **Publish awards automatically** off so awards wait in **Awaiting publish**, or turn it on so every award goes straight to the family. Click **Create**. The achievement opens on its **Rule** tab, beside **Awarded athletes** and (for publishers) **Awaiting publish**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set how athletes earn it">
    **Award this achievement automatically** starts on. Under **How athletes earn it**, switch on each condition you want and pick its values: **Gender**, **Age**, **Membership** and **Pass** (shown when your club uses memberships and passes), **Waiver**, **Medical information**, **Holds level** (holds or has completed), **Holds achievement** (published awards only) or **Completed evaluation** (on the templates you pick).

    **Combining conditions.** Every condition you switch on must be met. Within one condition, any one pick counts. To require all, tick **All selections must be satisfied for this requirement to be met.** (offered once you pick two or more, except for **Gender**).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what earning it grants">
    Under **What earning it grants**, pick **Grant these levels**, **Mark these levels completed** (the level moves to the athlete's history) and **Grant these badges**. These apply on every award, and revoking one never takes them back.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the rule">
    Click **Save changes**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**When awards happen.** Uplifter checks an athlete when a membership or pass is granted, a waiver is signed, medical information is saved, a level is granted, an evaluation is completed or another achievement is awarded. An age rule is also checked on its own, so the achievement is awarded once the athlete reaches the age. Saving a rule doesn't look back: an athlete who already qualifies is checked at their next qualifying event, or you can award it by hand.

**Pausing an achievement.** Turn **Award this achievement automatically** off and the **Rule** tab shows "Paused: automatic awarding is off." If a program, membership, booking or competition still requires the achievement, saving asks you to choose:

* **Keep requiring it (recommended)**: athletes who already hold it still pass, and staff can still award it by hand.
* **Stop requiring this achievement**: it's removed from every rule, and a rule left accepting nothing switches off.

**When automatic awarding turns itself off.** Deleting a level, membership, pass, waiver, evaluation template or achievement that a condition uses turns automatic awarding off, and the **Rule** tab explains why under **Automatic awarding was turned off**. Review the conditions, turn it back on and save.

**Create badges.** Go to **Settings > Training > Badges** and click **New Badge**. Enter a **Name** and optionally a **Description**, **Badge image** and **Color**, then click **Create Badge**. Achievements hand it out through **Grant these badges**, or staff can award it from an athlete's profile.

**What families see.** Families see achievements on the **Achievements** page in the family portal. **What families see first** on the **All achievements** tab picks the view they land on: **Earned and in progress** (the default) or **Earned only**. They can still switch. Click **Save changes** to keep your pick (needs **Edit Training**). Only achievements with a **Completed evaluation** condition show progress; others appear once earned.

**Where else achievements are used.** A level's **Required achievements (optional)** and the registration rules on programs, memberships, bookings and competitions can require one. Awarding and publishing are in the companion article.
