# How do I manage and resolve an incident?

> Move an incident through its status lifecycle, add resolution notes, and read the audit log.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * The statuses aren't a locked sequence: from an **Open** incident you can **Mark in progress**, **Resolve**, or **Archive** directly. **Reopen** moves a resolved incident back to open, and **Archive** is terminal and hides the incident from the default list.
  * Resolving requires resolution notes, and changing status requires the **Resolve Incidents** permission.
  * Every status change is written to an immutable **Status history** (who and when). There's no form to edit the report's fields in this version, and email is sent only on filing — never on resolution.
</Note>

Open an incident from **Athletes → Incidents** to work it toward resolution. The actions below are the ones available depending on the incident's current status — you don't have to follow them in order.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start investigating (optional)">
    On the detail page, click **Mark in progress** to show an open incident is being looked into. This step is optional — you can resolve or archive an open incident directly.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Resolve it">
    Click **Resolve**, enter the required **Resolution notes**, and confirm. The incident records who resolved it and when.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reopen or archive">
    If new information surfaces, use **Reopen** to move a resolved incident back to open. When a report is fully closed out, **Archive** it (available from any active status) — you'll confirm first, and archived incidents drop off the default list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The **Status history** on the detail page lists every transition, so you always have a clear, tamper-proof record.
