# How do I ask a question once per family, once per purchase, or for each item bought?

> Set who a custom question is about, so checkout asks it once per family, once per order, or once for every item instead of once per athlete.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Pick the subject up front.** Set **Who is this answer about?** when you create the question. It can't be changed once anyone has answered. Custom questions need **Custom Information** on your plan.
  * **Family questions need a sign-in.** The guardian must be signed in at checkout, and one answer is shared by the whole household.
  * **Where each kind works.** Programs and memberships can ask any kind of question. Store products and passes can only ask **Each purchased item** questions.
  * **Past purchases stay complete.** **Ask on purchases from** keeps purchases made before that date complete with their original answers.
</Note>

**Before you start.** Only club admins can create or change custom questions, and a question is asked only where you attach it. For the other question settings, see [How do I add custom questions to registration forms?](/club/registration-enrollment/add-custom-registration-questions)

**The four subjects.**

| Who is this answer about? | How often it's asked | Belongs to |
| - | - | - |
| **An athlete** (default) | Once per athlete, again after its **Validity Period** ends | The athlete |
| **A family (shared household answer)** | Once per family, reused until its **Validity Period** ends | The family |
| **The whole purchase (ask once)** | Once per order | The order |
| **Each purchased item (separate answers)** | Once per item line in the order (a line bought in a quantity of 3 is asked once) | That item line |

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the subject">
    In **Settings > Athletes > Custom Questions**, choose **Create Question**, or **Edit Question** from a question's menu. Right under **Answer Type**, set **Who is this answer about?**
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set a start date for purchase questions (optional)">
    **The whole purchase** and **Each purchased item** add an **Ask on purchases from** date. Leave it blank to ask on every purchase, or set a date to ask only from that day on. Save with **Add Question** or **Save Changes**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Attach the question">
    On a program, turn on **Custom Questions** on the **Requirements** step (for an existing program: row menu > **Configure** > **Requirements**). On a membership, use the same switch in **Requirements & Restrictions**. Both list every active question, whatever its subject. Tick the ones to ask. A store product or pass has its own **Custom Questions** field that lists only **Each purchased item (separate answers)** questions.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**What families see at checkout.** Family, purchase and item questions share one checkout step, **Additional Information**: a section for each item (with its athlete's name, if any), then **About this purchase**, then **About your family** (followed by the family's name). Athlete questions are asked separately, one athlete at a time. Checkout won't finish while a required answer is missing or has expired.

**When a family question stops checkout.** A guardian who isn't signed in sees "Sign in to answer your family's questions". If no family is chosen for an item, checkout shows "Choose a family for \[item] to answer its household questions". Guardians can also answer family questions on their family's page in the family portal, one card per club.

**Locking.** Once a question has answers, its subject is fixed; create a new question instead. A question stays **Each purchased item** while any product or pass uses it. Imported instructor questions show **Instructor (imported, read-only)** and can't be switched.

**Where answers show up.** Family answers: the **Family questions** card on the family's page (**Athletes > Families**). Purchase and item answers: the **Purchase answers** card on the invoice (**Financials > Invoices**). Families see theirs as **Purchase questions** on their order.
