# How do I take attendance from the admin dashboard?

> Open the session from a program's Sessions tab and mark each registered athlete Present, Absent, Late, or Excused.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Where.** **Registrations > Programs**, open your program, then its **Sessions** tab, then click the session's date.
  * **How.** In **Registrations & Attendance**, use each athlete's **Mark...** menu: **Present**, **Absent**, **Late** or **Excused**.
  * **Who can be marked, and by whom.** Only athletes whose registration is **Registered** get the menu, and you need the **Manage Attendance** permission.
  * **Reports only.** **Athletes > Attendance** shows attendance but can't record it.
</Note>

You mark attendance on the session itself, not on a report page.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the session">
    Go to **Registrations > Programs**, open the program, and click its **Sessions** tab. Click the session's **Date** to open its page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Mark each athlete">
    In **Registrations & Attendance**, **Attendance** is the last column. Pick **Present**, **Absent**, **Late** or **Excused** from each athlete's **Mark...** menu. Each choice saves right away; to change a mark, pick a different status. Only athletes whose **Registration** shows **Registered** get the menu, so a waitlisted or cancelled athlete has none.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Close out the session (optional)">
    Marking doesn't complete the session. Open the session's actions menu (the three-dot button) and choose **Mark completed**, or leave it: a session completes on its own one hour after it ends.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Who can mark.** Your role needs the **Manage Attendance** permission (under **Coaching**: "Take and view attendance records"). Without it the menu still shows, but a mark fails with "Failed to save attendance".

**Absent can notify the family.** Marking an athlete **Absent** can send their family your club's **Attendance Missed** notification. **Excused** doesn't.

**Clearing a mark, or marking ahead.** The **Mark...** menu can't clear a mark. Open the athlete's profile, go to its **Attendance** tab, click the pencil on that class, then **Clear mark**. The same tab has **Add Attendance** for an upcoming class, for example an absence the family already told you about. See [How do I record or correct attendance from an athlete's profile?](/club/athletes-families/how-do-i-record-attendance-from-an-athletes-profile).

**Pages that report, not record.** The program's own **Attendance** tab rolls attendance up **By Athlete** or **By Session**. In **By Session**, click a date to open that session. If you can mark attendance, the **Take or edit attendance by session** button takes you to the **Sessions** tab. **Athletes > Attendance** is reporting only and says so: "This page reports attendance. To record or change it, open a session from a program's Sessions tab, or an athlete's Attendance tab."
