# How do I require an earlier purchase before someone can register?

> Require a program enrollment, booking, event ticket, store purchase or competition entry before someone can register, and choose how strictly it's enforced.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Five kinds.** Require a program enrollment, booking reservation, event ticket, store purchase or competition entry the family (or this athlete) already has.
  * **Each rule is tunable.** Set what counts, over what time (any time, this season, or between dates) and how strict it is: **Refuse early** (default), **Refuse at checkout**, or **Warn only**.
  * **Staff aren't blocked.** Staff selling on a family's behalf are warned, never stopped.
  * **Saved programs.** Edit purchase conditions on the program page's **Overview** tab and click **Save purchase conditions**.
</Note>

**Where to find it.** On a new or draft program, or through **Edit step-by-step** on a live one, **Purchase conditions** is a section of the **Requirements** step. On a live program, it's also a card on the program page's **Overview** tab (**Registrations > Programs**). An **Application Required** program has no Requirements step: once it's live, set its purchase conditions on the **Overview** tab instead.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Switch on a card">
    Turn on **Program enrollment**, **Booking reservation**, **Event ticket**, **Store purchase** or **Competition entry**. A card shows only when its feature is on and there's something to pick.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick what qualifies and who must have it">
    Pick the items that count. With two or more, tick **All selections must be satisfied for this requirement to be met.** to need every one. Under **Who must have it**, choose **Anyone in the family** or **This athlete only**. Store purchases and event tickets always check the whole family.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set Counts when and Looking at">
    **Counts when** lists the qualifying statuses. By default, enrolled counts (paid or not); waitlisted or cancelled doesn't. **Looking at** is **Any time**, **This season only** (clubs using seasons) or **Between dates** (**From**, **To** or both). "This season" is the season current on the day the family buys.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose How strict and Applies to">
    Pick a strictness (see below). On a **Full & Drop-in** program, **Applies to** sets **Both**, **Full enrollment only** or **Drop-ins only**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    In the step-by-step editor, they save with the program. On the **Overview** tab, click **Save purchase conditions**. A switched-on card needs at least one pick.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**How strict.** Each rule has its own:

| Choice | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Refuse early** (default) | The family cannot add it to their cart until they have this. |
| **Refuse at checkout** | It goes in the cart; they are stopped at payment until they have this. |
| **Warn only** | The family is told what is missing and can buy it anyway. |

**Getting the missing thing.** A missing store item or event ticket is offered right there and added to the cart, marked **Required by** the program. A missing enrollment, booking or competition entry is never added: the family is linked to register for it first.

**What families see.** The program card on your club website shows a **Purchase required** label (not for Warn only rules), and the program page lists each condition under **Before you get this program**. At checkout, an unmet rule appears under **Before you can pay**, or under **Heads up** with "You can still buy this." if it's Warn only.

**Also on the Overview tab.** **Required by** lists anything that requires this program. Its **Family membership** and **Family pass** cards (anyone in the family holds one) have no **How strict** choice. Store products and ticket types do.

**Other places.** The same cards appear on bookings, events, competitions, memberships, passes, competition events (**Entry conditions**), and saved store products and ticket types.
