# How do I add an athlete to one session for free, for example as a trial?

> Use Add trial athlete on a session's page to put an athlete from your roster into that one session at no charge.

  **Must know**

  * **Free, one session.** **Add trial athlete** adds an athlete to that one session at no charge.
  * **Roster first.** The athlete must already be on your roster.
  * **Capacity still counts.** A full session sends the athlete to the waitlist if it is on. Otherwise you confirm with **Add anyway**.

**Before you start.** Your role needs the **Edit Athletes** permission, or the add fails with a "Forbidden" message.

  <Step title="Open the session">
    Click it on the **Calendar**, or open it from the program's **Sessions** tab.

  <Step title="Find the athlete">
    In **Registrations & Attendance**, click **Add trial athlete** and type their name into **Search athletes...**. The search covers your whole roster, not just this program.

  <Step title="Add them">
    Click **Add** next to their name. An athlete already registered for this session shows **Added** instead.
  </Step>

  <Step title="If the session is full">
    If the program's waitlist is on, the athlete goes on the waitlist ("Session is full - athlete added to the waitlist."). If it is off, a **Session is full** prompt appears: click **Add anyway** to add them over capacity.

**What it costs.** Nothing: no invoice is created, so there is nothing to refund.

**What happens next.** The athlete shows as **Registered**. Mark their attendance as usual. They are not enrolled in the program or any other session. To let a waitlisted athlete in, set their **Registration** to **Registered**. To take an athlete off, click the **X** on their row, untick **Refund this athlete** if you see it, then click **Cancel registration**.
