# What is a pass and which athletes does it cover?

> How passes work in Uplifter and which athletes a single pass covers.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * A pass is held by the **guardian (the family)**, not an individual athlete. One purchase covers every athlete that guardian directly guards, plus the guardian themselves if they're an adult athlete.
  * Coverage is **single-hop only** — it does not chain out to a co-guardian's or grandparent's athletes.
  * A pass is primarily a **discounted-pricing tool** for program registration, not a standalone punch card.
  * Available on plans that include **Passes** — if you don't see it, ask your Uplifter contact.
</Note>

A pass is something a family buys once that lowers what they pay when they register for covered programs. When a pass holder registers an athlete for a program you've priced for that pass, the system charges the discounted price instead of the flat price.

Because the pass belongs to the guardian, it applies across the whole family: every athlete that guardian directly guards is covered, and an adult who is their own athlete is covered too. Coverage stops at one hop, though — it reaches only the athletes that guardian directly guards, so it doesn't extend to a co-guardian's other, non-shared children or up to a grandparent. (For an athlete two guardians share, each guardian's own eligible pass still applies to that athlete independently.)

A pass isn't just a punch card. Its main job is unlocking a better program price for holders. You can also use a pass to *gate* a program so that only holders can register, and you can choose between unlimited use and a fixed number of credits when you create it.
