# How do I set up sales tax at checkout?

> Turn on sales tax, set the rate, choose who pays it, and add a GST/HST number for Canadian clubs.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Customer pays** adds tax on top of the charge at checkout; **Organization pays** means your prices already include tax and you absorb it (you still owe it).
  * US clubs enter **one combined rate**; Canadian clubs configure **multiple tax lines** (e.g. GST, PST) plus a **GST/HST registration number**.
  * Collected tax is summarized in the **Tax Liability** card on this same page — total tax collected from paid invoices over any period you pick.
</Note>

Sales tax lives on **Settings → Financial Setup → Checkout & Taxes**, in the **Sales Tax Configuration** card.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn tax on">
    Toggle **Collect sales tax** on. With it off, no tax is applied at checkout.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set your rate">
    US clubs enter a single **Tax rate (%)** — the combined state and local rate for your location (it's pre-filled from your state at signup). Canadian clubs manage **Tax lines**: add each line with a name and rate, or click **Re-apply region defaults** to load your province's standard lines. Each line shows separately at checkout, on receipts, and on invoices.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose who pays">
    Under **Who pays the sales tax?**, pick **Customer pays** (tax appears as a separate line on top of the price) or **Organization pays** (tax-inclusive pricing — tax isn't shown, but you still owe it).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add your GST/HST number (Canada)">
    Canadian clubs can enter a **GST/HST registration number** so it appears on invoices, receipts, and payment emails. It's required once annual revenue exceeds \$30,000 CAD.
