# How do I exempt items from sales tax or set a different rate per location?

> Mark a program, membership or store product tax exempt, stop taxing a whole type of item, or set a different tax rate for each location.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Tax Exempt on an item** (a program, membership or store product) means it is never taxed, renewals and recurring billing included.
  * **Stop taxing a whole type** by unchecking it on the **Taxability** card. With more than one location, you can override it per location.
  * **Tax by location** shows only when you have more than one location, and is read-only if you use tax lines (Canadian clubs use tax lines).
  * **New charges only:** changes apply to charges created after you save.
</Note>

**Exempt one item.** Turn on the item's **Tax Exempt** switch, then save the item. An exempt item is never taxed, whatever your other tax settings say.

| Item | Where the switch is |
| - | - |
| Program | The **Billing** step or tab when you create or edit the program |
| Membership | The **Create Membership** or **Edit Membership** form |
| Store product | The product panel under **Store > Products** |

While tax is on, the **Sales Tax Configuration** card counts them, for example: "3 programs, 1 store product are marked tax exempt and never taxed. Manage this on each item's edit form."

**Stop taxing a type of item or change a location's rate.**

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Checkout & Taxes">
    Go to **Settings > Financials > Checkout & Taxes**. The **Taxability** and **Tax by location** cards show only while **Collect sales tax** is on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Uncheck the types you don't tax">
    On the **Taxability** card, uncheck a type to stop taxing everything of that kind: Programs, Memberships, Passes, Store items, Events, Competitions, Bookings, Punch cards or Custom line items (types for features your club hasn't turned on are hidden). With one location, each type has one **Collected** checkbox.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Override a location (optional)">
    With more than one location, the card is a grid: an **All locations** column plus one per location. Change a location's box to override the all-locations setting there. A dot marks the override, and a **Reset** button appears under that location's name.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set a location's rate">
    The **Tax by location** card lists each location as "Org default · \[rate]%" (your **Tax rate (%)**). Click **Override** and enter that location's rate, or click the reset arrow beside it to go back to the default. "Locations without an override use the organization rate above."
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save Changes** in the page header.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**If you use tax lines.** If your club uses itemized tax lines (as Canadian clubs normally do), the **Tax by location** card is read-only: "Per-location rates aren't available while itemized tax lines are configured." Per-location **Taxability** still works.

**Which location a charge uses.** When families check out, a program, event or competition uses the location it runs at, and a store product uses its pickup location. Memberships, passes, bookings and delivered products have no location, so they use your club-wide rate and the **All locations** setting.

**What wins.** A location's own box or rate beats the all-locations setting and the club-wide rate, and **Tax Exempt** beats both. Discounts, gift cards and payment-plan deferrals are never taxed.

**New charges only.** Saved changes apply to charges created afterward, including the next recurring charge or renewal. Saving never re-taxes invoices you've already sent. A draft invoice picks up the new settings when you send it.
