# How does membership proration work, and how do I turn it off?

> What a member pays when they join partway through a membership's billing cycle, and how to turn the Prorate partial periods switch off.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Set per membership, on by default.** **Prorate partial periods** is in each membership's **Pricing & Billing** card.
  * **On:** a member who joins partway through the current cycle pays the cycle price times the days left, divided by the days in the cycle. Buying the next cycle ahead, and every renewal, is full price.
  * **Off:** members pay the full cycle price whenever they join. The switch isn't offered for a **One-time** or **Per Session** membership with no **End Date**.
  * **New purchases only.** A change reaches only later purchases, including staff sales through **Add member** and manual invoices.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the membership form">
    Go to **Athletes > Memberships**. Click **Create Membership**, or choose **Edit** from a membership's row menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the switch">
    In the **Pricing & Billing** card, **Prorate partial periods** sits below **Billing Interval**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Switch it and save">
    Turn it off to always charge full price, or on to prorate, then save (**Save Changes** on a published membership).
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Don't see the switch?** A **One-time** or **Per Session** membership with no **End Date** has no period to prorate, so Uplifter hides the switch and stores it off. New memberships start that way. Picking **Monthly** or **Yearly**, or adding an **End Date**, brings the switch back. It shows off if that's how it was last saved, so turn it on again if you want to prorate.

**How the first charge is worked out.** Only a purchase that starts coverage now, in the running cycle (**Start now** on your club website), is prorated. Days left counts today, so joining on the cycle's first day pays full price. Choosing **Next cycle** is full price, and so is every renewal: only the first cycle can be prorated. Non-renewing memberships are usually a flat price, so the help text suggests turning it off for them.

**Staff sales follow the same rule.** A manual invoice line for a cycle under way is priced this way, and so is **Add member** into the cycle badged **Current**, whose **Charge summary** shows **Prorated amount** when it applies.

**With a club Monthly billing day.** If **Settings > Financials > Payment Schedule** sets a **Monthly billing day**, a new monthly member pays at checkout for the rest of the current cycle. If the billing day that pays for the next cycle has already come (or is today), the next full cycle is collected too. After that, they're charged on your billing day. The switch still decides whether that partial cycle is prorated or full price.

**Changing it later.** It stays editable after members join, never re-prices anyone already in, and never opens the **Change how this membership bills?** dialog.

**Programs and passes work differently.** Programs prorate by scheduled sessions left, set per category under **Settings > Financials > Payment Schedule > Proration**, with a per-program override. That **Proration** card doesn't control memberships. Passes never prorate.
