# How do I manually add a member to a membership?

> Enroll an athlete into a membership yourself, into the current cycle or comped from the next one.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Add to current billing cycle** enrolls the athlete in the current cycle now. No payment is taken when you add them — for a recurring membership it sets up the auto-renewal, and the first charge falls on the next cycle date.
  * **Comp into next cycle** is a free (\$0) enrollment with no charge that starts with the next cycle — and stays free.
  * Adding a member is **blocked if the cycle is already at capacity**.
</Note>

Alongside families buying online, you can enroll an athlete into a membership by hand — useful for staff comps, phone sign-ups, or offline payments.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the membership">
    On the **Memberships** page, open the membership you want, then click **Add member**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the athlete">
    Use the **Athlete** search box to find and select the athlete.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how to bill">
    Under **Billing**, pick one:

    * **Add to current billing cycle** — adds the athlete to the current cycle without taking a payment now. For a recurring membership it sets up the auto-renewal, so the first charge lands on the next cycle date and it renews from there.
    * **Comp into next cycle (no charge)** — a free enrollment that begins with the next billing cycle, with no recurring charge.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the member">
    Click **Add member**. The athlete now appears under **Members** on the membership.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the target cycle is full, the add is refused so the cycle can't be oversold — raise the membership's capacity (while it has room) or comp the athlete into the next cycle instead.

Adding to the current cycle gets the athlete covered right away and, for a recurring membership, starts their auto-renewal on the next cycle date. Comping into the next cycle grants free coverage from that period with no charge — and because no recurring charge is created, a comped member stays free: setting a price override on them later won't start billing, since there's no charge for it to attach to.
