# How do I edit a membership that has members?

> What you can change once a membership has active holders, and what locks.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Once a membership has **at least one active member**, its **billing terms — price, billing interval, and start/end dates — lock**. Those fields are disabled on the form.
  * Non-billing fields (name, description, image, restrictions, purchase window) stay editable.
  * For **recurring** memberships, existing billing cycles are **never rewritten retroactively** — edits take effect from the upcoming cycle. A **one-time / per-session** membership has only its single cycle, so an allowed edit (like a rename) updates that cycle in place.
</Note>

You can edit a membership through most of its life, but what's editable narrows once real members are attached, so nobody's price or dates change out from under them. (An **archived** membership is the exception — it drops off the list and no longer offers an **Edit** action.)

**While it has no active members** (draft, scheduled, or active with zero holders), everything is open — treat it like initial setup.

**Once at least one member is active,** the form locks the fields that would change what people are billed. If you hover a disabled field you'll see:

> This membership has active members, so its billing terms (price, billing interval, dates) can only be changed by Uplifter. Contact support to make this change.

Everything else stays editable:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the membership">
    On the **Memberships** page, open the **⋯** menu and choose **Edit**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change the non-billing fields">
    Update the name, description, image, season, GL code, restrictions, or purchase window. These save normally.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Your changes apply going forward — the current and future cycles pick them up, but past cycles and anyone's existing coverage dates are untouched.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If you genuinely need to change a locked billing field on a membership that already has members, reach out to your Uplifter contact — this guardrail exists so a price or date change can't silently rebill or shorten coverage for people who already bought in. To change one member's price without touching the default, use a per-member price override instead.
