# We're coming from another system: how do we get our data in?

> Uplifter's team imports your data from your previous system or spreadsheets for you, and nothing is imported until the import is confirmed.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Self-serve setup has no import step.** Uplifter's team imports your data from another system for you.
  * **Clean up your data first.** Guardians and staff are matched by email, and athletes by name plus date of birth.
  * **Nothing is imported until the import is confirmed**, and only Uplifter can confirm it.
</Note>

**Who does the import.** You set up the rest of your club yourself, but Uplifter's team brings your data over from your previous system or from spreadsheets. Moving from Uplifter 1.0 instead? That is a [separate process](/migrating-from-1-0/how-moving-from-uplifter-1-works).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Contact Uplifter support">
    Tell [Uplifter support](/club/get-set-up/contact-uplifter-support) which system you're moving from. You can email [support@uplifterinc.com](mailto:support@uplifterinc.com) before you have a dashboard.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Clean up your records">
    Fix duplicate or missing guardian emails, and make athlete names and birth dates consistent.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Export your data">
    Export your records from your previous system. Your own spreadsheets are mapped column by column.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Uplifter confirms the import">
    Your data is held for review first, and nothing lands in your club until Uplifter confirms it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**What can come over.** Guardians, staff, facilities, programs, athletes, medical information, enrollments, memberships (plans, passes and who holds them), waivers (text and signatures) and store products.

**How records are matched.** These rules decide whether a row updates a record your club already has, comes in as a new one, or is skipped:

| Data | Matched by |
| - | - |
| Guardians | Email. A guardian with no email is skipped, never merged into someone else. |
| Staff | Email. Anyone new is created. |
| Athletes | Name plus date of birth, so two rows sharing both become one athlete. |
| Programs | Name, so rows sharing a class name become one program. |
| Facilities, memberships and passes | Name. A new one is created when nothing matches. |
| Waivers | Title. Signatures are recorded against the signer's email. |
| Products | SKU, or name when a row has no SKU, so a re-import refreshes price and stock instead of adding a second item. |
| Enrollments | A matching program and a matching athlete. Rows missing either are skipped. |

**If an import is never confirmed.** The held import is discarded.

**Tell your families.** Families brought over in an import may not get a welcome email, so let them know about their new accounts yourself.

**Preparing a file with Ask Hero.** If Uplifter has [turned on Ask Hero for your club](/club/ask-hero/turn-ask-hero-on-off), staff with the **Edit Settings** permission can have it prepare an import from a file in the admin dashboard, but only Uplifter can [confirm it](/club/ask-hero/import-data-with-hero).
