# How do I assign staff to an event?

> Add staff to an event, set each person's role, and handle certification blocks.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Available on plans that include **Events** — if you don't see it, ask your Uplifter contact.
  * Four roles are available: **Lead**, **Assistant**, **Volunteer**, and **Observer**. New assignments default to Assistant.
  * If your club requires a certification for events, a staff member missing a required, unexpired, passed certification **cannot be assigned** — they're greyed out in the picker and the save is blocked.

Staff are assigned on the **Staff** step of the event builder while you're creating the event. Assign everyone before you finish — there's no separate editor for changing an event's staff after it's created.

    In the event builder, move to the last step, **Staff**.

  <Step title="Add a staff member">
    Use the **Add Staff Member** dropdown to pick someone. Each person you add appears in the assigned list below.

  <Step title="Set each role">
    For every assigned person, choose their role from the dropdown — Lead, Assistant, Volunteer, or Observer. Use the trash icon to remove someone.

    Click **Create Event** to store the assignments.

If certifications are required for events, a banner lists the required certifications and any staff member who's missing one is disabled in the picker with a "Missing" note. Grant or update that certification first, then add them — do this before you finish creating the event.
