# Why didn't a discount code apply at checkout?

> The reasons a promo code is rejected or shows no match at checkout.

  * A code that doesn't fit the cart isn't an error — the most common reason is simply that nothing in the cart matches the code's scope.
  * Only one discount applies per line, so a line already discounted by another code is skipped.
  * Codes only work while they're **Active** — Draft, Scheduled, Deactivated, and Expired codes never apply.

When a customer applies a code, checkout gives one of a few responses. Here's what each means so you can help a family sort it out.

* **"…isn't a valid discount code."** — The code was typed wrong or doesn't exist for your club. Check spelling; codes are case-insensitive but must match exactly otherwise.
* **"…doesn't apply to any item in this cart"** (amber) — The cart has nothing that matches the code's scope or item list. For example, a passes-only code with no pass in the cart.
* **"…doesn't meet the minimum eligible subtotal for this order."** — The eligible lines total less than the code's minimum purchase amount. Only the lines the code covers count toward that minimum, not the whole cart.
* **"…already used X of Y times…"** (red) — The customer has hit the per-customer limit (counted per athlete for programs, memberships, and passes; per account for store items).
* **"Code no longer valid"** — The code reached its total-redemptions cap and is now Expired.

A code can also silently do nothing on a line that's *already* discounted by another code, because only one discount applies per line. And a code that isn't currently Active — one that's still a draft, scheduled for the future, deactivated, or past its end date — won't apply at all.
