# How do I set up a discount that applies automatically?

> Build a codeless discount that applies itself at checkout, and use conditions to decide who qualifies.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Automatic discounts apply at checkout with **no code**. You build them on the same **Discounts** page as promo codes, and they carry an **Automatic** badge in the list.
  * On the **Type** step, pick an automatic starting point — **Automatic sale**, **Staff discount**, **Member price**, **Family / sibling**, **Multi-class**, **New customer welcome**, or **Early-bird sale**. Choosing one hides the **Code** field.
  * Add **Conditions** to decide who qualifies. When a rule carries more than one condition, **all conditions must be met**.
</Note>

Automatic discounts apply themselves at checkout — the customer never types a code. You create them under **Settings > Financial Setup > Discounts**, right alongside your promo codes.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start an automatic discount">
    Click **Create discount**, then on the **Type** step choose an automatic type — an **Automatic sale**, a **Staff discount**, a **Member price**, a **Family / sibling** or **Multi-class** rule, a **New customer welcome**, or an **Early-bird sale**. Since there's no code to share, the **Code** field drops off and the wizard notes that the discount applies automatically.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set who and what it covers">
    On the **General** step, set the **Scope** (and optional item list) for what the discount comes off, plus a **Valid from** and optional **Valid to** window. Use **Conditions** to limit who qualifies — for example the account already holds a membership, a **Staff role**, a **New customer**, a **Payment interval**, or a minimum count of **Athletes in cart** / **Items in cart**. Every condition you add has to be met for the discount to apply.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the amount">
    On the **Pricing** step, choose a percentage or fixed amount and any caps. For a family or multi-class rule you can also turn on **Only discount beyond the minimum** — the first qualifying items stay full price and the extra ones are discounted — and set **Max discounted items**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish">
    **Save as Draft** or publish. Once it's active, the discount applies on its own; at checkout the customer sees a line such as "Summer Sale — applied automatically."
  </Step>
</Steps>

If both an automatic discount and a typed code could apply to the same line, the better one wins — so a customer's code can be replaced by a larger automatic saving.
