# How do I set up a Buy X, get Y discount?

> Build a promo code that discounts reward items once a family's cart holds enough qualifying items.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **It's a promo code.** **Buy X, get Y** isn't an automatic discount: families type the code at checkout.
  * **Three things are required.** At least one item under **Customer buys**, a **Minimum quantity** of 1 or more, and a reward side narrower than **All products**.
  * **Bought items stay full price.** Unless you also list a buy item as a reward item, the items a family buys aren't discounted.
  * **Recurring items.** Most Buy X, get Y offers can only use **First charge**.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick the type">
    Go to **Settings > Financials > Discounts**, click **Create discount**, and pick **Buy X, get Y** ("Buy a qualifying number of items and get a discount on the rest.") on the **Type** step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it and add a code">
    Enter a **Campaign name** and **Code**, and check **Valid from**. **Copy from Existing** copies another discount's settings (buy items and minimum included), all but its name and code.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set what the family buys">
    In the **Customer buys** card, pick one or more qualifying **Items** (saving is blocked until you do). Set **Minimum quantity** to how many of those items the cart needs (1 or more).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set what the family gets">
    **Customer gets** is the reward side. It starts at **All products**, and the item pickers show even there. Pick specific reward items, or narrow the scope to fewer categories. Until you do, the pickers read "Pick at least one reward item, or narrow the scope above", and **Next** and **Save as Draft** stay disabled.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the amount and save">
    Click **Next**. On **Pricing**, pick **%** or **\$** with the toggle, enter the **Percent off** or **Amount off**, and set any limits. Then click **Create Discount**, or **Save as Draft** to keep working.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**How it applies.** The buy side is counted across the whole cart. Once the cart holds the **Minimum quantity** of **Customer buys** items, the discount comes off the **Customer gets** items. If you narrowed the scope but picked no reward items, the bought items stay full price, and they're left out of the subtotal checked against any **Minimum purchase amount**. To discount a bought item too, pick it as a reward item as well.

**Recurring items.** For memberships, passes and programs, **Discount applies to** on **Pricing** starts on **First charge**. A renewal bills one item at a time, so **Every charge** only saves when **Minimum quantity** is 1 and your reward items include a buy item. Otherwise the save is refused ("A buy-X-get-Y discount whose qualifying items differ from its discounted items can't apply to every recurring charge"), so use **First charge**.

**What families see.** If the cart has a reward item but too few buy items, the code stays at checkout as an amber label, "\[CODE] needs more qualifying items in this cart", and turns green once they add enough. If nothing in the cart can get the reward, the label reads "\[CODE] doesn't apply to any item in this cart".

**Checking your setup.** The saved discount's detail page shows **Customer gets**, **Customer buys** and **Buy minimum**. [Cart Preview](/club/discounts/preview-a-discount-before-customers-use-it) can't test the buy side: its sample cart never holds your items, so the code can read "Buy-side requirement not met in preview."
