# How do I set a minimum spend or cap the discount?

> Require a minimum purchase for a code and limit the dollars off per line.

  **Must know**

  * The minimum is measured against the **eligible lines only** (the ones the code's scope covers), not the whole order total.
  * **Max discount cap** applies to percentage discounts only — it's hidden for fixed-amount codes.
  * A fixed-amount discount can never take off more than the price of the line it applies to.

Both of these optional fields live on the **Pricing** step of the discount wizard.

## Minimum purchase amount

This sets a floor before the code applies. If the eligible lines in the cart add up to less than the minimum, the code won't apply and the customer is told it doesn't meet the minimum for this order. The check looks only at the lines the code covers — so a "\$100 minimum on programs" code ignores any store items or non-matching programs in the same cart.

## Max discount cap

For a percentage discount, this caps the dollars that can come off any single line. For example, "25% off, max $50" takes 25% off a $300 program but stops at $50 rather than $75. When the cap kicks in, the in-dashboard **Cart Preview** tester flags the line as capped ("max") so you can confirm it — customers don't see a per-line "max" marker at checkout. This is useful when a percentage could otherwise produce a larger discount than you intend on your most expensive items.

Fixed-amount discounts don't show this field — a fixed amount is already its own ceiling, and it will never exceed the line's own price.
