# How do Family and sibling discounts work?

> How an automatic Family (sibling) discount counts a family's athletes, uses one allowance per order, and what to check when it doesn't apply.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Built on the Discounts page.** Family / sibling discounts are built on **Settings > Financials > Discounts**, not on the program, which keeps only **Session Discounts** (multi-session).
  * **Siblings count across orders when the family is signed in.** By default the count includes the family's active enrollments plus this order, so a sibling enrolled earlier counts. Only athletes in the Family that owns the purchase count.
  * **One use per order.** A Family discount counts as one use per order, however many siblings it covers. You choose how uses are counted (**Count usage by**) when you create it, and you can't change it later.
  * **No stacking.** A Family discount and a program's session discount never stack; the better one applies to each item.
</Note>

A Family discount is an automatic rule with no code. It applies when the owning Family has two or more qualifying athletes, and it discounts the additional athletes.

**Where to build it.** Build it on **Settings > Financials > Discounts** with the steps below. On a program's **Billing** step or tab, the **Family discounts** card notes that existing program rules keep their original amounts and recipients. Its **Manage Family discounts** button opens Discounts filtered to that program's Family discounts, including shared rules (changing a shared rule changes it everywhere in its scope). Save a new program before adding its Family discount.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick the template">
    On **Settings > Financials > Discounts**, click **Create discount** and choose **Family / sibling discount** on the **Type** step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the presets">
    On **General**, enter a **Campaign name** (families see it at checkout). **Conditions** arrive as **Athlete count**, **At least** 2, with **Count** on **Across the family's active enrollments**. From **Manage Family discounts**, **Scope** starts at **Programs** with that program picked.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the amount">
    On **Pricing**, **Only discount beyond the minimum** is ticked and **Count usage by** is **Orders per owning Family**. Enter **Percent off** (or switch to **\$** for **Amount off**) and click **Create Discount**. Other fields are covered in [setting up an automatic discount](/club/discounts/set-up-an-automatic-discount).
  </Step>
</Steps>

**How the count works.** The count can run two ways:

* **Across the family's active enrollments**: "Counts the family's currently active enrollments, memberships and passes plus this order."
* **This order**: "Counts only the items in this order." An **At most** row always counts this order.

Either way, it counts different athletes, only enrollments inside the discount's **Scope**, and only the Family that owns the purchase. A shared athlete doesn't combine two households, but merged Families count together.

**At checkout.** Existing enrollments count only when the family is signed in. If signing in would unlock the discount, checkout shows "Sign in to apply family discounts". If the total drops during checkout, it reads "Your total went down to \[amount] - a discount was applied. Please review and confirm." A label gives the reason, such as "\[campaign name] - 2 athletes enrolled".

**Who stays at full price.** With **Only discount beyond the minimum** and the template's settings, an already-enrolled sibling takes the full-price place, so a sibling added later is discounted. When every athlete is new in this order, the one with the highest total pays full price. **Max discounted items (Optional)** caps how many items get the discount, cheapest first.

**The Family allowance.** With **Orders per owning Family**, the limits read **Total discounted orders (Optional)** and **orders per Family (Optional)**, and the detail page shows **Family allowance**. An item with no owning Family can't use the discount.

**No stacking.** A Family discount and a program's **Session Discounts** never both apply to one item; the better one does. The exception is an **Every charge** Family discount, which keeps a recurring item even if it saves less on the first charge.

**Renewals.** The template starts on **First charge**. A count across active enrollments can use **Every charge** (under **Discount applies to**). Each renewal then re-checks the count, so the discount starts, stops or moves between siblings as they enroll or drop. Families see upcoming amounts marked "(estimated)". A **This order** count can't use **Every charge**.

**Discounts named "Family discount: \[program name]".** These came from sibling rules once set on individual programs. See [reviewing imported discounts](/club/discounts/review-imported-discounts) for how they differ.

**When a Family discount doesn't apply.** Check whether:

* The family is signed out.
* The sibling's registration belongs to a different Family.
* **Count** is **This order** and the siblings are on separate orders.
* **Only discount beyond the minimum** is keeping one athlete at full price, as designed.
* The discount is **Draft**, **Scheduled**, **Expired** or **Deactivated**, or outside its **Valid from** / **Valid to** dates.
* The item, or the sibling's enrollment, is outside the discount's **Scope**.
* The **Family allowance** or **Total discounted orders** is used up.
* A larger session discount won the item.
* The item can't be discounted, such as rate-card program tuition.

**Test it first.** In [Cart Preview](/club/discounts/preview-a-discount-before-customers-use-it), **Demo catalog** has a **Family has N other active enrollments** control. Both modes otherwise assume no other active enrollments, so a Family discount may apply more often in real checkouts.
