# How do I discount recurring memberships or passes?

> Set how a code on a recurring product applies at checkout and what the customer sees about their next charge.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * The **Apply to recurring charges** option only appears when the discount's scope includes a recurring product type (memberships, passes, or programs). It's hidden when the code is limited to store items.
  * **First charge** takes the discount off the initial payment only, then renewals return to full price. **Every charge** keeps the discount on every renewal for as long as the code stays active.
  * Either way the customer sees a checkout banner with the discount applied, the amount they're charged today, and their next billing date and amount.
</Note>

Memberships and passes bill on a repeating cycle, so a code that touches them lets you control how the offer is presented to the customer at checkout.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Set a scope that includes a recurring type">
    On the **General** step, include **Memberships**, **Passes**, or **Programs** in the scope. This makes the recurring control appear on the **Pricing** step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how it's shown at checkout">
    Under **Apply to recurring charges**, pick one:

    * **First charge** ("One-time") — the discount comes off the initial payment only, and renewals then bill at the regular price. The customer sees a checkout banner confirming the discount, the amount they're charged today, and their next billing date and amount. It only calls the charge free when the first payment actually comes to \$0.
    * **Every charge** ("Including renewals") — the discount keeps applying on every renewal for as long as the code stays active. The banner shows the discounted amount charged today and the discounted amount each renewal will bill, with the regular price noted alongside.

    With **First charge** the saving lands on that first payment and renewals return to full price; with **Every charge** renewals stay discounted until you deactivate the code or it expires.
  </Step>
</Steps>

For a "first month free" style offer, use **First charge** — the checkout banner clearly states when full-price billing resumes, so families know what to expect on their next cycle.
