# How do I activate, pause, or reactivate a discount?

> Use the Activate and Deactivate controls to publish, pause, and resume a code.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Activating a Draft** publishes it and starts it today, regardless of any future start date it had.
  * **Deactivating** stops the code from applying to new orders right away; it doesn't affect orders already paid.
  * A deactivated code can be **reactivated** at any time.
</Note>

Each discount has a single status control that changes label depending on its current state. You'll find it on the discount's detail page and in the row menu on the **Discounts** list.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the discount">
    Go to **Settings > Financial Setup > Discounts** and click the discount (or use its three-dot menu on the list).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish a draft">
    On a **Draft**, click **Activate**. Confirm, and the discount is published and starts immediately — it moves to **Active**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pause a live code">
    On an **Active** discount, click **Deactivate**. It stops applying at checkout and moves to **Deactivated** until you turn it back on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Resume a paused code">
    On a **Deactivated** discount, click **Activate** to make it redeemable again.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Scheduled discounts don't have this toggle — they activate on their own when their start date arrives, and you adjust them by editing. Expired codes are permanent and can't be reactivated; create a new code instead.
