# What are notification rules and reminders?

> How Uplifter's automated-message engine pairs an event trigger with an email, text, or announcement.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * Your club is seeded with a set of mandatory **System Rules** that are locked — you can't change their wording, timing, or delete them. You can only re-enable one you previously disabled.
  * Every rule delivers one of three ways: **Send Email**, **Send SMS**, or **Post Announcement**.
  * Recipients who have opted out of email are skipped for email, and a text only reaches people who have given SMS consent and not opted out.
</Note>

Notification rules are Uplifter's automated-message engine. Each rule pairs a **trigger** — something that happens in your club, such as a payment coming due, an invoice being issued, or a program enrollment — with a message that goes out on your behalf. Some rules fire the moment the event happens; others fire on a schedule, like a reminder a few days before a due date. When a family has more than one athlete or upcoming charge, the built-in class and payment reminders combine into a single email per day rather than one per athlete or charge.

You'll find them under **Settings → Communication Setup → Notifications** (the page itself is titled *Notifications & Reminders*), split across two tabs:

* **Organization Rules** — the custom automations you create for your club. You can edit their copy and timing, disable them, or delete them entirely.
* **System Rules** — the locked notifications that ship with the platform. Their copy and timing are managed centrally, and once a system rule is active it stays active. If you've disabled one, you can turn it back on, but you can't edit or remove it.

Each rule shows its trigger, delivery method, recipients, and whether it's Active or Inactive. A lock icon marks the rules you can't change.
