# What does Missing requirements on a family mean, and how do I resolve it?

> Why a paid purchase shows up under Missing requirements on a family's page, what Participation pending and Participation continues mean, and how to check again or approve an exception.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Admins are alerted.** When a paid purchase is missing a family requirement, staff with the **Admin** role get an alert that links to the family's page.
  * **The badge shows where participation stands.** Each case on the **Missing requirements** card reads **Participation pending** or **Participation continues**.
  * **Exceptions are gated.** **Check again** re-tests the requirement. **Approve exception** needs the **Resolve Family Requirements** permission and a reason of at least 10 characters.
  * **An exception covers only the family requirement.** Other approval, medical and consent requirements still apply.
</Note>

**What it means.** A family requirement is something the family holds that a purchase depends on, such as a membership, a pass, or an earlier purchase like a program enrollment. When a paid purchase is missing one, Uplifter opens a case on the family. Billing continues until staff resolve it or cancel the purchase.

**Where to find it.** Admins get a high-priority bell alert, **A family purchase needs requirements resolved** (or **An active family registration needs review** when the registration was already active), with an **Open the family** link. You can also open the family from **Athletes > Families**, where the **Requirements** column counts open cases.

**Reading a case.** The **Missing requirements** card names the athlete (or **Family purchase**), the item, when the case opened and the reason, plus **Reserved places**, **Purchase amount** and **Billing**.

| Badge | What it means | Billing while it's open |
| - | - | - |
| **Participation pending** | Not active yet. A place may or may not be reserved. | Reserved: the agreed billing schedule continues. Not held: the payment stands while the club works to open a spot. |
| **Participation continues** | The athlete was already taking part. | Existing participation and billing continue while staff review. |

**Who can approve.** **Approve exception** appears only for staff with **Resolve Family Requirements** (the **Admin** role includes it), and only once a place is reserved. Staff without it can still use **Check again**.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check again">
    Click **Check again** once the family meets the requirement, or after you add capacity or free a spot. If it now passes, the case closes. Guardians can use it from their **Family** page too.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review purchase">
    Click **Review purchase** to open the invoice. Only staff with **View Financials** see it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Approve exception">
    If the family can't meet it, click **Approve exception**. Enter at least 10 characters in **Reason for this exception**, then click **Approve exception** (or **Keep pending** to back out). The reason is kept for the audit history, and the case closes.
