# How do I record or correct attendance from an athlete's profile?

> Mark an upcoming class ahead of time, correct a past mark, or clear one from the Attendance tab on an athlete's profile.

<Note>
  **Must know**

  * **Two sections.** The **Attendance** tab has **Scheduled attendance** (classes marked ahead of time) and **Attendance history** (past classes, including ones nobody recorded, shown as **Not taken**).
  * **Mark ahead with Add Attendance.** Use it for an upcoming class, for example an absence the family already told you about. The missed-class email for a pre-marked absence waits until the class has ended, unless your club's **Attendance Missed** email is timed **At** rather than **After**.
  * **Edit attendance changes a mark.** **Clear mark** removes it, so a past class goes back to **Not taken**.
  * **Permissions.** Recording attendance needs **Manage Attendance** for classes and **Edit Events** for events.
</Note>

**Where to find it.** Go to **Athletes > Directory**, open the athlete, and select the **Attendance** tab. **View Attendance** on the athlete's row menu opens the same tab.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Mark a class ahead of time">
    In **Scheduled attendance**, select **Add Attendance** (**Add scheduled attendance** when the section is empty). Choose the **Program / event**, then the **Class date** (today through the next 3 months). Pick a **Status** (**Present**, **Late**, **Absent** or **Excused**), add an optional note, and select **Add scheduled attendance**. A date that already has a mark opens as **Change attendance**, with a **Change this mark** button. A class happening today goes straight into **Attendance history**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Correct or fill in a past class">
    In **Attendance history**, select the pencil (**Edit attendance**) on the row, including **Not taken** rows. When the mark records who made it, the dialog shows who last edited it and when. Change the status or note and select **Save**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Clear a mark">
    Open **Edit attendance** on a marked row and select **Clear mark**. A past class goes back to **Not taken** and keeps its note. An upcoming one leaves **Scheduled attendance**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**What the tiles count.** The five tiles (**Attendance rate**, **Present**, **Absent**, **Late**, **Excused**) count past classes with a recorded status only. **Not taken** and scheduled classes are left out. They follow your **Filters**, not the search box.

**Finding a class.** Search by program or event name, a date such as Oct 15, status, location or season. **Filters** narrows both tables by program or event, season, status (including **Not taken**), location and date range. Cancelled classes don't appear.

**The missed-class email.** If your club sends missed-class emails, marking an upcoming class **Absent** doesn't email the family right away: the email waits until the class's scheduled end, and nothing goes out if you change or clear the mark first. **Excused** never sends one. If your club's **Attendance Missed** email is timed **At** rather than **After** (check the rule in **Settings > Communication > Notifications**), it goes out as soon as you save.

**Who can do this.** **Manage Attendance** covers class rows and **Edit Events** covers event rows. Without either, you can view the tab, but **Add Attendance**, the pencil and the **Notes** column are hidden.

**The other way in.** To mark every athlete in a class on one page, open the session from its program: see [How do I take attendance from the admin dashboard?](/club/programs-classes/take-attendance-from-the-dashboard). **Athletes > Attendance** only reports attendance.
